Beguinenwiese in the City of Perleberg - a place to “arrive and stay”
With an area of approximately 5,800 m², Beguinenwiese meadow is located directly on the south-western border of the old town of Perleberg and next to a redevelopment area. Once lacking in urban development, it has now become a place for fun and games as well as a popular meeting place for the people of Perleberg.
Perleberg is a town in the Prignitz district with a population of around 12,200 inhabitants. Although the town’s population has developed well, there are still structural problems in this rural area, which is located far from any major towns or cities. Therefore, Perleberg is now to be made even more attractive for the people living here and for those considering returning. Each successful urban development and redevelopment project represents added value, as it strengthens the sense of belonging and identification with the hometown and the local area.
A new highlight for the city centre
The wasteland at Beguinenwiese meadow in front of Roland School is the first sub-project of the urban design initiative entitled “Grüner Saum” (Green Rim). The purpose of the construction work was to redesign the open space, including all of the paths, and to build new playgrounds and sports areas to improve the quality of leisure for all residents, guests and the children from the adjacent schools. The project is part of the urban planning concept “Family-friendly Westprignitz region - A place to arrive and stay” and was co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) as part of the urban and rural planning competition of the State of Brandenburg.
A place to rest and romp around
Thanks to a creative design by the commissioned landscape architect, the new open space has now become a state-of-the-art, multifunctional playground that includes a balancing rope, a seesaw, a sound system and much more. In addition, a football pitch and basketball court complete the range of activities. The separation of traffic and play areas reduces any potential danger for children and residents. Carefully arranged traffic areas have been installed with car parking spaces. On the banks of the Stepenitz river, a path was built along the course of the river, featuring resting areas with seating and wooden platforms. Newly planted trees and bushes round out the picture. Due to the active participation of the people of Perleberg in the redesign process, Beguinenwiese meadow is today a place where children and young people frequently come together, filling it with joy and laughter.
Successful reclamation of unused areas
All stakeholders in administration, local politics and social institutions of the city of Perleberg agreed to remove the inner-city brownfield sites. The success of this project is confirmed by the fact that this redevelopment is now benefitting all generations.
