The new bicycle parking garage in Eberswalde is intended to make it easier for commuters and other travellers to use the station as a transfer point to public transport. The secure parking spaces near the station encourage people to use environmentally friendly means of transport and to switch to cycling more often.

In recent years, the city of Eberswalde has done a lot to promote cycling in the urban area and thus to better regulate the volume of traffic. Sustainable mobility is not only an important part of everyday life for the population – it is also the prerequisite for a sustainable economy. According to the state development plan of the capital region, Eberswalde is one of the growing cities in Brandenburg. A steady increase in commuter traffic by public transport is forecast for the future. This is reflected in the urban and rural strategy “Green. Clever. Together. Shaping perspectives for quality of life for all generations together”, as part of which the new bicycle parking garage between Bergerstraße and Eberswalde railway station was built. Around 80 % of the costs for the construction of the facility at the traffic junction were financed by the European Regional Development Fund.

Increasing demand for Bike & Ride facilities

Now up to 604 bicycles can be parked safely and protected from the weather on the two floors near the tracks. All target groups have been taken into account. In addition to double-deck parking spaces, leaning bars for cargo bikes and designated spaces for parents with children, there are also 60 bicycle boxes (with and without charging function) that can be rented at reasonable prices. In particular, there is an increasing demand for secure parking facilities for expensive e-bikes, which will motivate more commuters to use environmentally friendly means of transport due to their greater range.

Sustainable timber construction as a showpiece

Viewed holistically, the project makes an extensive contribution to climate protection not only through its use, but also through its structural design. At 1,300 m2 of floor space, ramps and floors were made of concrete and roof, façade and girder constructions were made of wood. This ecological and sustainable hybrid construction contributes to carbon fixation through the materials used, thus removing CO2 from the atmosphere in the long term. The photovoltaic modules on the roof are used to supply the building’s own electricity. By storing the solar energy, the e-bike charging stations, for example, can be operated. Approximately 800 of the 1,000 m2 roof area will also be planted with a bee-friendly substrate. The planting can filter air pollutants and fine particles from the air and promote the biodiversity of insects in the urban area. During heavy rainfall, this also delays the runoff of rainwater and its evaporation improves the surrounding climate.
