The State of Brandenburg is using European funding to promote strategies for reducing CO2 emissions, in relation to sustainable mobility. For the strengthening and promotion of cycling in Brandenburg, the maintenance of the cycle path infrastructure along federal and state roads is an important prerequisite.

Especially in the summer months and at weekends, the stretch between Glindow and Klaistow was not very safe for cyclists. Among other things, the Spargelhof (asparagus farm) in Klaistow, a popular excursion destination, often caused increased traffic. The proximity of cars created dangerous situations for cyclists of all ages. A cycle path was therefore built along the L90 state road between Glindow and Klaistow (district of Potsdam-Mittelmark) to improve traffic conditions for everyone travelling by bike. The new three-metre-wide cycle path offers enough space for bicycles with children‘s trailers and for the expected high volume of visitors in the summer months. For example, anyone who wants to come to the Landesgartenschau 2022 (Regional Garden Show) in Beelitz from the direction of Werder (Havel) can now easily get there by bike. The approximately 6.3 km long route complements the region‘s network of cycle paths.

The extension of the cycle path was funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and implemented by the Brandenburg State Road Administration (Landesbetrieb für Straßenwesen Brandenburg). There are now connections in many directions – to Fichtenwalde, Werder (Havel) and Beelitz. Further construction is planned in the direction of Lehnin. With the expansion of the path network, cyclists will be able to travel much more safely in their leisure time or on their way to school.

The new cycle path between Klaistow and Glindow is part of an overall concept for the Potsdam-Mittelmark region and is an important element for strengthening cycling in Brandenburg. In the districts of Potsdam- Mittelmark, Havelland, Märkisch Oderland, Ostprignitz- Ruppin, Elbe-Elster and Barnim, the Brandenburg State Road Administration has therefore supported the expansion of numerous cycle paths since 2017 funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) with approximately EUR 9.9 million. Journeys between towns previously made by car can now be completed in an environmentally friendly and safe manner by bicycle or on foot.

According to the Federal Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt), a switch from car to cycling and walking can save around 140 grams of greenhouse gas emissions per passenger-kilometre compared to car travel. Thus, the new cycle path also contributes to Germany‘s climate protection plan with its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and to the mobility transition in Brandenburg.
